Essen/Vienna, 12th October 2016 – STEAG GmbH will in future run part of its operations based on VisoTech’s Periotheus Software Suite. The Suite’s standardised functional areas, including Schedule and Balancing Group Management, as well as the EPEX SPOT Autotrader, will be utilised. STEAG is equipping itself for the future by expanding and modernising its IT systems, in particular in the rapidly growing intraday sector.
“The intraday market for power is in a period of upheaval. The number of market participants and the amount traded has drastically increased. As a result, reaction times are becoming shorter and it is becoming increasingly more difficult to achieve good prices on the market. With the VisoTech solution, we can now support our traders with a powerful tool. “, says Holger Späk, Project Engineer for Trading & Optimization at STEAG.
The new solution automates important parts of intraday trading on EPEX SPOT and serves as a central data hub for all types of market-related communication and messages from all energy processes. The deciding reason for choosing VisoTech was the fully developed module for automated intraday trading. Alongside its user friendliness, further important factors were most notably the flexibility and easy expandability of the solution offered. Additionally, the use of standardised areas in Periotheus Suite fulfils one of STEAG’s strategic requirements, which stipulates the use of standardised and scalable IT solutions.
Periotheus will be integrated seamlessly into STEAG’s existing system environment thanks to the interfaces available. By expanding and modernizing the IT infrastructure, STEAG is gearing up for the future, in particular in the rapidly growing intraday sector. Periotheus is set to commence operation in January 2017.
Renewable energies are changing the intraday market
More than one third of European power consumption is traded on the EPEX European power exchange. The increasing amount of renewable energies has resulted in power trading becoming ever quicker and more challenging. Without the support of additional tools it has become almost impossible to comply with risk limits efficiently. Decisions must be made on much shorter notice and market competition is growing constantly. “The significance of the intraday market for power is increasing steadily and therefore also the demand for reliable and efficient tools. Our Autotrader allows STEAG to implement their trading strategies on the market automatically. The implementation of the Periotheus’ schedule management functionality provides various synergies. As a result, further operating processes can be simplified and automated”, says Johannes Püller, Managing Director of VisoTech.
Autotraders are creating new opportunities for market participants
VisoTech’s Autotrader allows intraday power trading on EPEX SPOT to be fully automated. Therefore, power plants or energy storage systems can be marketed optimally and open positions from clients can be closed as efficiently as possible, in line with your specifications. Companies can trade outside of their regular business hours with the support of automated trading solutions. A lot of unused potential is found in intraday trading, which can be exploited by the Autotrader, allowing traders to achieve even better prices. One example is the large speed advantage – VisoTech’s solution can trade all positions simultaneously within a few milliseconds. The integrated limit management prevents transactions at extreme price settings or quantity fluctuations. Proactive notifications by e-mail or SMS keep the person responsible constantly up-to-date.
