As the participants can confirm, the energy industry’s first event dedicated to intraday algo-trading was an absolute success. More than 60 participants from 11 countries joined us June 7-8 in Frankfurt to learn about the latest trends in algo-trading, and used the opportunity to network and to share experiences with their industry colleagues.
VisoTech Managing Director Jürgen Mayerhofer opened with a look into the development of automated trading and a comparison with trading on finance markets. Sami Madani from The Advisory House followed up with an overview of available solutions for automated energy trading.
Wolfgang Eichberger then shared the challenges of developing an algorithmic trading solution. In short: excitement, agony, hard work and routine, again and again. He then presented the advantages and disadvantages of building your own automated trading vs. buying a standard solution.
We then got a look at the hot topic of Blockchain, as Max Schönfisch from ewi Energy Research & Scenarios provided a surprising perspective on its place in energy trading.
In a frank and honest discussion, traders from STEAG, N-ERGIE and Stadtwerke München then described what it’s like to actually use an autotrader in practice. They described the benefits and challenges and shared useful tips.
In the audience-favourite presentation, VisoTech developer Patrick Fodor explained the challenges of algorithm testing and explained how artificial intelligence can simulate market behaviour for more thorough testing.
We then got a look from the perspective of the markets, with Dr. Egon Gemmel from Deutsche Börse talking about XBID and its impact. Marc Pournin from EPEX SPOT and Nord Pool’s Henrik Hansen followed up with updates on their respective markets and APIs.
To wrap up day one, Johannes Püller dug into specific use cases of automated trading on power and gas markets, and explained how the various trading strategies work.
In the evening we all enjoyed a pleasant time with good food and drink. The relaxing atmosphere provided a great opportunity to share experiences and make contacts.
On day two, in the hands-on workshop everyone dug into code to create trading algorithms. From the beginners making their first algorithm to the experienced developers delving into advanced topics, everyone had the opportunity to sharpen their skills.
Our thanks go to all of the speakers and participants who contributed to the open and positive environment. We look forward to seeing you at next year’s Algo-Trading Innovation Hub or at the VisoTech User Forum in the fall.
