User Forum October 16, 2019: 20 years of VisoTech
With our last event behind us, we’re now gearing up for the VisoTech User Forum: your annual glimpse into the Periotheus Platform and the world of automated energy trading.
This year we’re celebrating 20 years of VisoTech! We’ve come a long way. In 1999 Johannes Püller, soon joined by Wolfgang Eichberger, started developing software in an office in Johannes’ apartment. In two decades the company has grown into a leading provider of European short-term energy trading solutions with a team of 50. Our clients include some of the top names in the European energy industry. And we are now a part of one of the most recognised companies in energy trading.
As usual the User Forum takes place in our hometown of Vienna. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about the latest Periotheus updates and to discover how our integration with Trayport is going. Of course, you can expect interesting presentations about the latest industry trends, as well as many chances to network with your peers in energy trading.
The following day we’ll host another hands-on algo-coding workshop. Beginners can kickstart their development of trading algorithms, while experienced developers will have the opportunity to go in-depth and sharpen their skills. Sign up now, these workshops normally fill up fast.
Where do you want your trading to be?
Algo-trading of energy has come a long way in just a few years. But watch out – not all solutions are created equal! We put together a video to help you understand the different stages of trading automation, from simple order placement to complex algorithms and AI. Where are you now, and where do you want to be?
OMV GAS chooses autoTRADER for short-term gas trading
Oil and gas giant OMV has selected the Periotheus autoTRADER to enable efficient gas trading on the PEGAS spot market and to take advantage of market opportunities day or night. With Periotheus Scheduling & Balancing already in place, OMV can enjoy the benefits of full integration without the challenges and risks of an additional interface.
Nord Pool predicts massive growth of Nordic algo-trading
Adoption of algo-trading in the Nordic region has lagged behind that in much more liquid markets such as Germany. Nord Pool’s Espen Døvle, however, predicts automated trading in the Nordics to jump to 50% of all intraday trading once quarter-hour products are in place. The head of trading at Norwegian Lyse also sees a strong advantage in algo-trading, including for hydropower, where automation would allow available capacity to be more easily used 24×7. See the full story from Montel.
Market expansions across the continent
European energy markets have seen increased expansion in the last few weeks. Nord Pool just added day-ahead auctions in CWE, introducing competition among European power exchanges. PEGAS is now trading natural gas from Spain. EEX introduced power futures in Bulgaria, Serbia and Slovenia. And in XBID wave 2, planned for later this year, seven more countries will join the cross-border intraday trading initiative. Meanwhile, all major exchanges are reporting continued growth in short-term trading volume. What will this mean for liquidity, volatility, prices? We’ll be keeping an eye open.
A very sad farewell
A few weeks ago, on July 4, we received news of the sudden and unexpected loss of a dear colleague, Key Account Manager Peter Heindl. In the words of Jürgen Mayerhofer:
“I usually talk about strategy and revenue… but today I’m forced to speak about a topic that really matters in life – a beloved colleague, a true VisoMind.
I had the pleasure to meet him for the first time two and a half years ago. Since then I was intrigued by his easiness, his charming way with other colleagues and customers – always having a smile on his face. He was one of the most likeable persons that I have ever met.”
Peter was a rare person: kind, generous and above all, authentic. We will miss his smile, his humour and his positive outlook.
Peter was known for his sunny disposition. He always looked out for the good of family, friends and business partners and never thought of himself. With his way of finding a common consensus, he was always well-liked by everyone around him.
The VisoTech team knows that Peter is irreplaceable. He was truly a one-of-a-kind friend.
