DB Energie is investing in the future of power trading

DB subsidiary is automating trading on power exchanges with VisoTech

(Frankfurt am Main/Vienna, 17.01.2018)  Deutsche Bahn is one of the largest energy consumers in Germany, as well as the fifth largest power consumer with its DB Energie energy service provider. In order to automate its short-term trading operations, the company chose to implement VisoTech’s autoTRADER Pro. With this, DB Energie is relying on one of Europe’s leading software solutions for fully-automated short term power trading.

DB Energie provides around 18,000 trains and 5,400 stations with energy daily. The energy consumption is equal to that of Berlin. Additionally, the energy service provider of Deutsche Bahn sources power for industrial, commercial and private customers.

Increasing amount of renewable energies

As an environmental pioneer, Deutsche Bahn has set itself the goal of increasing the current amount of renewable energies in the traction supply mix from 42 percent to 70 percent by 2030. By 2050, rail traffic should be emission-free.

Due to the volatile supply of renewable energies, there is an increased need for the digitalisation of processes in the energy industry. In particular wind energy, whose availability is difficult to forecast, leads to a higher intensity of trading shortly before the close of trading. This short-term nature can only really be dealt with using a suitable software solution.

Comprehensive and flexible

“VisoTech convinced us with their solution and in-depth specialised knowledge”, said Andre Krah, from short-term trading at DB Energie. “We were looking for a tool which is reliable and offers us enough possibilities to react to changing market conditions.” DB Energie decided on the most comprehensive solution from VisoTech: the autoTRADER Pro. The system is able to trade power fully-automatically based on tested algorithms. The autoTRADER Pro supports all relevant European trading platforms, can market multiple portfolios simultaneously and offers development tools for DB Energie to create their own algorithms.

Jürgen Mayerhofer, managing director at VisoTech: “The intraday market is the key element for the direct marketing of renewable energy. However, the speed of trading is massive, the volatility is high and the daily market volume is no longer manageable for a person. As more and more energy providers are relying on automation, DB Energie has made a groundbreaking decision to introduce our autoTRADER Pro. The software allows all of the market potential

to be used optimally, can be easily integrated into existing systems and can be adjusted flexibly to new requirements.”

Powerful and flexible

VisoTech’s Periotheus autoTRADER is one of Europe’s leading software solutions for fully-automated short-term power trading. From administration to visualisations and developer tools, the system leaves nothing to be desired. In addition to DB Energie, other companies in the industry, such as VERBUND, STEAG, Iberdrola and TIWAG-Tiroler Wasserkraft AG, also rely on the solution from VisoTech.
