With more than 70 participants from top European energy companies and an exciting new programme delivered by top trading experts, the second annual Algo-Trading Innovation Hub, June 5-6 in Frankfurt, was even better than the first.
Jürgen Mayerhofer opened with a perspective on VisoTech’s acquisition by Trayport, then shared his vision of an expanded automated trading environment including gas, brokered OTC and futures. Robin Girmes from Energy Weather followed with a look at weather volatility and the opportunities it provides.
Martin Hiller from FORRS Partners then presented a roadmap to implement automated trading, and helped to answer the question “How much automation do I need?” And with so much autoTRADER growth in the last year, the field report this time focused on new customers. Representatives from Eneco, EVN and Ørsted shared their reasons for going into algo-trading as well as tips for the evaluation process and implementation.
Christian Vizjak and Patrick Fodor gave us a look at algorithmic trading of futures and forwards, as well as the role of AI. Since algo-trading was first pioneered in financial markets, Oxford University professor Nir Vulkan shared some insights from the financial world: a glimpse into the possible future of energy trading, AI included. Finally, one of the clear benefits of automated trading is speed. Wolfgang Eichberger shared new technologies and techniques to squeeze the best performance from algorithmic trading.
In the breaks and afterwards at the laid-back get-together, participants shared their own experiences, made new contacts and enjoyed the view of the Frankfurt skyline. Participants in the Thursday workshop – from experienced algorithm developers to first-timers – had the chance to dig deep into algo development and to sharpen their skills.
We continue to expand our presence across Europe; this time we’ve entered the Baltic market. Together with our partner IP Systems we are delivering a trading and optimisation solution to Eesti Energia, the largest energy producer in the Baltic region.
Our customers are proud of their successes in algo-trading and are happy to provide some insights. Our long-time customer TIWAG shared their experiences with algo-trading of hydro power. Meanwhile service provider ES·FOR·IN has expanded their use of the autoTRADER into the gas market.
Energy trading events across Europe
Our people have been busy at a number of industry events. We sponsored PyDays Vienna, where our developers learned some of the latest trends and ideas in Python. In Malmö at the Energy Opticon User Forum Christoph Malzer gave a talk about the evolution of energy algo-trading, while at the Euroforum conference “Regelenergiemarkt Strom & Intraday-Handel” in Berlin, Wolfgang Eichberger gave a talk on the subject of “Robot Wars”, in which he shared how to get the best trading bot. And we attended a user event hosted by Trayport, where we met several customers and had a chance to get to know more of our new colleagues.

VisoMinds never stop learning
This month we take a look at another VisoMind actively expanding his knowledge. In this case, the programme is quite technical. Andreas Werschlan, a Linux System Administrator in the Operations department, studied IT infrastructure management at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland. He actually began while working at another company, and finished his studies last October.
Naturally, during his studies he was able to significantly increase his technical skills and to learn the latest technologies. The bachelor’s coursework included far more programming than he had expected – today’s infrastructure is largely virtual, and almost everything is defined in code.
He was able to write a bachelor’s thesis in cooperation with VisoTech. The project involved a configuration management database (CMDB) connected with automated configuration management and included a proof of concept for future infrastructure automation at VisoTech.
Beyond technical skills the programme gave Andreas a tremendous amount of new ideas. After 15 years at one company, it’s easy to get tunnel vision. Working with fellow students who also had full-time jobs gave him a wide variety of new perspectives and inspiration.
At the same time, in such a programme students are often required to take on tasks they would not normally trust themselves to accomplish. Being pushed outside his comfort zone – and actually succeeding – gave Andreas a major confidence boost. It serves him well today in VisoTech’s rapidly changing IT environment.
The team continues to grow
We’re happy to welcome more new VisoMinds! Daria Schewzowa and Beatriz Abella Fernández have joined our Professional Services team as business analysts. Software developers Bernhard Thiel and Lukas Jahn will strengthen the development of our market-leading energy trading solutions. We look forward to continued growth as we integrate with Trayport’s solutions and especially as we build up a centre of excellence in AI and data science.
At the Algo-Trading Innovation Hub the openness and innovative spirit of the community we’ve built is as clear as ever. In the spirit of Steve Jobs, who said, “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower”, we are committed to remaining leaders in automated energy trading. We appreciate your trust and willingness to share, and look forward to delivering new and exciting solutions to take your energy trading to the next level.
