7 questions traders should be asking
Energy trading is getting faster, more complicated and increasingly digital. To stay on top in this rapidly changing environment, traders need to keep ahead of the latest trends and technologies. They should be asking questions, such as:
1. What impact does the growth of renewables have on energy trading?
The increase in variable energy sources such as wind and solar has dramatically increased volatility and trading volume on short-term markets. What can you do to react faster to opportunities? How can you profit from these trends?
2. How can I use data to boost my trading results?
A variety of new data sources are becoming available, as are numerous tools to analyse this data. How can you determine which data and tools deliver useful intelligence? And how do you integrate this into your existing system?
3. In what situations does automated trading deliver the greatest advantage?
Position closing, flexibility marketing, arbitrage, optimisation of storage, speculative trading; spot markets, futures & forwards… Where does it make sense to automate trading, and when is manual trading the better option?
4. How can I manage manual and automated trading together?
Using multiple trading screens is not the optimal solution. Ideally you want a consolidated view of all of your trading activity, with insight and control over trading algorithms and the ability to trade manually all in one place. How can this be achieved?
5. As the gas market goes global, how can I take advantage of new opportunities?
The gas market is growing, and the rise of LNG makes it possible to trade around the world. To capture the best prices and make the best of time and location spreads, you want the broadest possible access to global markets. What is the best solution?
6. What are the advantages of automating my scheduling processes?
Increasing international power and gas trade along with shorter gate closing times in power make market communication and scheduling exponentially more complex. How can automation help?
7. How should I test and implement my own trading algorithms?
Having dipped their toes into algo-trading, many energy trading companies are now taking the next step: developing their own algorithms. To be successful requires the right tools and processes for development, testing and implementation. What are best practices for algorithm development?
